I have been a member of Stumble upon for over 2 years. It is easy to use and for various sites has sent big surges in traffic. True, this traffic stays for a relatively short time, but even with a short average visit length, it is still a good way to create more exposure for your site. Due to stumbleupon traffic, I have seen the number of subscribers increase as a result.
These are some tips for getting the best out of Stumbleupon.
1. Not Necessary to be a sponsor
I paid $20 to become a sponsor, but, to be honest it is not necessary. It doesn’t seem to help get stumbles.
2. Don’t bother with stumbleupon Exchange sites
It’s hard to Game Stumbleupon. I have experimented with Sites which offer stumble exchanges. However, I no longer use them. I find that the traffic was relatively low for the effort involved. They seem to attract a lot of sites which don’t deserve to be stumbled. It seems a shame to spoil the good reputation of Stumbleupon by promoting less deserving sites. I’m sure stumbleupon will adjust filters to increasingly counter sites like this.
3. Ask Friends for the odd stumble.
The best strategy is to develop relationships with stumblers who have good quality websites. Offer to stumble some of their pages in return for the odd stumble back. This can be very effective
4. Don’t over Stumble your own Site.
If you stumble your own site, you may get a lot of stumbles. But, after about 10, Stumbleupon seem to wise up to the fact and stop sending more stumbles. Therefore, it is important to get other people to stumble your site. If you stumble your own site infrequently – it is fine
5. Stumbleupon rewards Quality.
The Best way to get people to stumble is to have something worth stumbling. If there is no quality, it will soon exit the stumbleupon system. Therefore target certain pages, don’t just think in terms of the home page.
6. Use Stumble upon as A blog.
If you make it attractive and useful, people will be more likely to add you as a friend. Although, I have to say that I think stumbleupon must be guilty of the highest number of hotlinking of pictures on the internet
7. Develop Your Stumble stature.
Add Friends, stumble good quality sites. Basically, not all accounts are equal. If you stumble spam, and have no friends, you won’t get many stumbles. – The Stumblupon algorithm is difficult to game. These are the factors which develop a more powerful stumbleupon account
- The number of Friends you have
- The number, variety and quality of stumbles you make
- Age of account. – longer is better
- People agreeing with your stumbles. Therefore, look out for new good sites to stumble
8. Focus on a Niche
It is probably better to focus on a niche, although I don’t do this.
9. Stumbleupon Wordpress Plugin
I added a stumbleupon plugin to make it easier to stumble pages.
10. Advertising for Stumbleupon.
Any have stated that stumbleupon advertising presents good value for money. As long as you have decent pages it can help start your blog. See Stumbleupon advertising at Problogger
So if you feel like stumbling any pages, please feel very welcome. Let me know and I’ll try return the favour.
I have actually ended up with 2 stumbleupon accounts (For 2 computers) One is a sponsor account. (I don’t recommend this, it makes more sense to have 1 account) MY stumbleupon accounts

Great post and good tips. StumbleUpon can be a great source for kickstarting traffic, but if you’re not providing good quality that traffic will dry up quickly.
I’ve seen as much as 1500 UVs come from just 5 stumbles on some of my pages, but if the thumbs ups stop, so does the traffic.
Bottom line, keep up the quality. You can never go wrong with quality.
BTW, page stumbled, thanks!
