Making Money Online: Is it worth it?

“I earn $6,000 per week, and only work 2 hours a day!”

No, unfortunately I cannot say this applies to me. However, there do seem to be quite a few such adverts floating around the internet. (Although, I can’t help but wonder – if it’s so easy to make money, why do they work so hard trying to sell these e-books?)

Anyway the model of earning a living through blogging is pretty enticing.- Write on your favourite topics, work from home – whenever you feel like it, and then just watch the dollars come flooding in. However, the reality is that earning money from blogging is not as easy as sometimes we would like to believe.
Part of the trouble is that A List bloggers such as John Chow, Darren Rowse, and Steve Pavlina seem to make big money effortlessly, yet it is worth bearing in mind, such bloggers are in the top 0.05% of bloggers. To match their income streams is not at all simple. The reality is that most bloggers trying to make a living online, don’t make it. For every A list blogger, there are maybe 10,000 would be aspiring blogger’s, struggling to make more than a few dollars a day.

What does it take to Make Money Online? 10 Tips.

1. Focus.

If you are uncertain about whether to monetise your blog, it is important to clear up any ambiguity. It is no good trying to make money with slight feelings of guilt about having ads on your site. If you don’t like the idea of ads on your personal site, start a new site with a commercial purpose. The important thing is that if you want to make money from your blog, you should have this as a clear purpose. This will help you to do things, which will actually make money.

2. Choose Right Topic.

You need to match your interests with a commercial aspect. Whatever advertising you use, you will get paid more if you blog about products or services people actually pay for. If you blog about Mortgages, mortgage companies will be willing to pay a good amount to advertise on your site. This is because, if people click on the ad and buy a mortgage, it is a big profit margin. Therefore, the mortgage companies are willing to bid a decent amount per click.
If you want to make money from a personal blog site, you may need to attract 100 times the traffic of a mortgage site. See: Choosing right blog niche.

3. What is your target audience?

If you blog about SEO and technical tips, your community is more likely to have Firefox adblocker. When I tried google adense in posts on this site, the click through rate was so low I took them away. The implications of this is that for a blog like this to make money, you need to look beyond google adsense.

Young teenagers have less spending power, ads on their sites are generally lower paying. If you can target professionals you will have more success.

New visitors from search engines, are more likely to click on ads, than regular, repeat visitors.

3. Be Productive.

To make a successful blog, it is important to be prolific. This means writing good, unique articles, which offer something useful. The more you write the more scope for visitors and income. You need to have discipline to keep blogging, avoid getting distracted by other things too much. See tips for increasing productivity.

4. Promoting your articles / blog

It is not enough to write good content. You have to make people aware of them and proactively get links. See ways to get links.

5. Good Design.

You need to have a good design to be taken seriously; avoid copying very popular templates. You do need some differentiation, (without spending too much time on design)

6. Patience.

Don’t expect to make money straight away. See your blog as an investment. For first 6 months, monetizing your site is not important, it can definitely wait. The important thing is to build up a base of readers and accumulate links.

7. You don’t have to be a A List blogger to make money online.

It is a mistake to feel you have to become a A list blogger like a John Chow, to make money online. Many people are making good money through blogs about certain products. It is probably easier to break into a niche about a certain niche, than become a famous A list blogger.

8. Jack of All Trades (Master of None)

Unfortunately, to do well at blogging you need to have expertise in many fields. It is not just enough to have enthusiasm and writing skills. Many bloggers learn these as you go along. When I get stuck on something, I google search the problem and hope to find a solution. It is important you are able and willing to learn as you go along. It is a steep learning curve at time. You will probably find in the beginning you make mistakes, this is no problem, as long as you can learn from them.

9. Learn Best way to Monetize site.

There are various ways to monetize a site. The most popular is google adsense. However, for some blogs this is not the best solution. For some niche’s adsense will give a low return, some bloggers don’t use adsense at all. This requires experimentation and studying the solutions of the other A list bloggers.

10. Learn from Others, but develop own style.

There are no real “secrets” of blogging. There is no need to pay $100 to learn best position for google ads. If you want to learn the best position for Google ads, look at a blogger who makes a good living from it. (It does show, though that if you want to make money from blogging you can’t be squeamish about putting ads on your site. If you have a tiny ad, hidden away people won’t click.) However, although we can learn from others, we have to have the confidence to develop our own personality.
